Gays and Polygamy
Two of my favorites, Charles Krauthammer and Andrew Sullivan, debate homosexuality, gay marriage, and polygamy. Both make excellent points.
The libertarian in me wants to be cool with polygamy, but the conservative Republican in me knows that the way rural Americans practice polygamy makes it de facto slavery for the women and children. And The Party of Lincoln ain't cool wit dat.
I will say this, though: Putting aside all issues of gayness' origins, as a person who admires legal consistency, I cannot see you how you can legalize gay marriage and *not* legalize polygamy. In a strict constitutional sense.

I think that needs more explanation. Woldn't it be sufficient to say Marriage is between two people rather than one man and one woman? I don't see the direct causality.
Well, yeah, that'd be the ideal way to do it.
But, because at this point in time gay marriage would (is) be legalized not through clearly worded initiatives or legislation, but rather judicial interpretation, means that the entire concept of marriage becomes an open-ended issue of rights, rather than a closed issue of legal priviledge.
Ah, I see. Well at that point they'd be forced to legislate, yes?
California keeps trying to pass a marriage proposal (ahem, as it were). maybe someday...
