Glad that's over
Well, Bush finally pulled the plug on poor old Harriet Miers. The only losers here are medicore cronies the world over, who sadly, will not get to see one of their own on the highest court in the land (and no, Souter doesn't count.)
Anyhoo, I was thinking that what bothers me the most is that history will record Harriet Miers as Bush *first* choice for the O'Connor vacancy. Think about that for a second. Let it sink in.
Having Harriet Miers for your first choice would be like having a million dollars to spend on a new car -- any car -- and falling in love with a 2002 Saturn.
Or imagine if you walked into an electronic store, waved off the salesman and proudly proclaimed that a 27" Zenith would be your next home entertainment center. This whole Miers things really defies reason. And for that, I'm so glad it's over.

For some reason I think this is just the begining of the nightmare. Let's not forget why she jumped ship....she wasn't conservative enough for the religious right!!! The first blow doesn't really hurt that much but the the second and the third, now those are the kickers.
I don't think it was her conservatism that did her in, outright, but rather her demonstrated lack of serious constitutional smarts. The backlash from the Judiciary Committee struck me as very bi-partisan -- they both seemed to agree that she failed her interviews and that funny questionaire that prospective justices fill out.
Obviously, the religious right's confusion on her leanings played a large role in keeping disenchantment growing, but that initital disenchantment all seemed to spring from her decidedly medicore beginnings and status as a Bush crony.
