"Mbeki looks set to sail the same course as Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe (also a fine orator but a lousy leader) in handling the probably impossible task of compensating his people for his country's cruel history. But he should be careful: Complete economic and social chaos precipitated by fast-track land reforms could be the result."
Uh... no shit. Where have you been for the last ten years, little girl? South Africa has been overrun by chaos of all forms for the last ten years. Mbeki, from day one, has been a disaster and his re-election last year only cemented this country's grim fate for the immediate future. The government is far more corrupt than any American can dream abd the lack of education only furthers the ignorance perpetuated through out the country. It's a mentality bent on revenge rather than progress. To have such a clear example just north of the border of how not to go about your business and proceed with that course of action anyway? They're just asking for it.
"But giving highly productive land to non-farmers without adequate training, technical support and financial backing is not only irresponsible, it's cruel."
Not to mention, blindly stupid. You know Mbeki doesn't believe that HIV causes AIDS? I'm serious.
It's infuriating. Thank you, Alex, for the sympathy.
