At least the guy admits it's "scant underpinning for a mighty far-fetched theory."
I always heard that in Rome, the goddess Hecate was symbolized by a broom (for her domestic and marriage-type role) and she was supposed to sweep the house after a birth to get rid of any bad luck that might harm the baby. People would traditionally jump over a broom at weddings. Hecate later became the patron of witches.
Also, this book I have says the broom came to symbolize tantric sex (that dildo aspect again, I guess), which had something to do with paganism at the time.
