Why?
Well they certainly didn't get this right.
Seriously, did the DC logo even *need* a change? I've never heard one comic fan say, "Yeah, I'd read DC, but well, they're logo is just so fucking stupid."
So, yep. The end of an era. The only DC logo I've known during my lifetime is no more. Color me bitter.

What did the old one look like?

Tom Spurgeon's comment that it looked like the logo of a frisbee team is about right, I think.
This is coming from a person who studied graphic design in college...the old logo WAS outdated. BUT...I don't like the new one either. It's definitely more modern, but it really is something you'd see on a frisbee.
Well, this is coming from me, a big sports fan:
The new logo looks like it belongs to a shitty hockey expansion team. It's just so unbelievably '90s. Even the color is off. The old logo (while dated in its own way, obviously) at least had a striking, four-color quality to it.
You could do it in blue and white, black and white, red and white, green and white, or yellow and white. This one is just a sort of a muted blue. Blah!
It does look sort of hockey.
"Outdated"? I would use the term "classic." The old logo was designed by none other than Milton Glaser. Just what are they teaching kids in graphic design classes these days? Oh yeah, the new logo sucks.
