I actually don't find this all that realistic a political landscape. I'd put the odds much more likely at full-scale Iraqi Civil War (and even I don't think that's *that* likely) than a joint Iran/Iraq super state.
I mean, jeeze, the Iranians aren't even Arabs. And outside of the Shiite clerics, it's not like the Iraqi Shiites were lining up to fight *for* the Iranians during the Iran/Iraq War.
I'm increasingly of the belief that the only thing more complex than understanding Western/Arab relations, is understanding intra-Arab relations. I mean, think about this:
Sunnis and Shiites Iraqis are both muslims Arabs. But they hate each other. Kurds are non-Arab Sunni Muslims (and sometimes Christians), but the Sunni Arabs hate them, too. And the Muslim Turks hate everyone.
