Tom Zarek, He is Not
Senor Zarqawi could stand to learn quite a bit from Battlestar Galactica's resident "freedom fighter"/morally ambiguous good-baddie.
"We have declared a bitter war against the principle of democracy and all those who seek to enact it."

It's not what you're asking for that we disagree with, it's how you ask for it. That's a viable response to many terrorists, and certainly the response they had to Zarek. The real baddies are the ones who ask for moral bankruptcy in a morally bankrupt manner.
That's interesting. So in a way, if Zarqawi believed in a theocratic dictatorship, but didn't blow up Shiite mosques and U.S. patrols to get it, if he even renounced violence, well, how would we even deal with him? We couldn't. He'd just be a really strange guy. The closest analogue would be those monarchists in Russia. They want the Czar back, but they're not about to blow up schools to get it.
Well yeah. I mean, I'd file Zarqawi under that second category, where we disagree with his demands AND his methods. But in general I think you have to break any terrorist action into those two categories and evaluate thusly. Thank you BSG/BG/Battlestaar/Galactica for clearing my thoughts on the issue. And of course you're right, if you disagree with the ideas but not the methods you really have no moral recourse but to argue the ideas. Which is the system we have inside the good ol' US of A, and the whole point of Democracy.
