2008 GOP
Blogger Bainbridge tries to make sense of the 2008 GOP slate. Here's a sample of his short critique.
Anyway, the social cons dominate the party's machinery...but, the GOP's first love is power and winning. And the desire to win races usually trumps the desire to stay true to whatever their ideology is at the moment. The GOP Fat Cats may just go with a pro-choicer, especially if the Dems run a conservative. Wouldn't it be crazy if in 2008 the GOP ran slightly to the left of the Dems? It could happen.
John McCain (OLD AND TOO MAVERICK)It's definitely a...shall we say, complex group. It could be a great group if the GOP High Command decided to go with pro-choicers. Then we'd have a legit shot of running Rudy. And I'd kill for a Rudy vs. Hillary race. Ah, the hilarity of two NYorkers campaigning in the South.
Bill Owens (WHO?)
George Pataki (PRO-CHOICE; PLUS HE'S FROM NY)
Tim Pawlenty (WHO?)
Condoleeza Rice (I'M A FAN; DON'T KNOW HER POSITION ON LIFE ISSUES)
Tom Ridge (WHY?)

With today's Republican party? I highly doubt it. For all the talk of Democrats' ideological purism, the GOP is just as bad if not worse. Did you see what they did to Specter? A well respected and moderate PA guy (my extremely liberal Mom votes for him every time) got slaughtered for being pro-choice. Meanwhile the our new Minority Leader is anti-choice. Hmm...
Given that the lesson of 2004 seemed to be "centrism is stupid, win with your base" I imagine both parties will hold to that. Frankly, because I like real debates and strong ideas, and I want to vote for a Democrat that's proud to be a Democrat, I'm all for it. But I imagine we'll keep getting people who seem to be saying the exact same things in a slightly different light, even when they're lying to do it.
I also hope the GOP really does think McCain is too old and too maverick because frankly there's not a Dem on god's green earth that could beat him in a Presidential race.
