Ugh
Whoever invented Ug Boots must be a merry prankster indeed. I was told, before ever laying eyes on the damned things, that the name is short for "Ugly." When I heard that I thought it was a nickname, but it's the actual brand name. This leads me to the inescapable conclusion that someone, probably someone I would really enjoy spending an afternoon with, decided that they would sell ugly clothing, even going so far as to call it ugly in the marketing campaign, and by sheer force of glossy advertising high fashion chic, trick people into buying the damn things. And it worked!
Last week I found out that even though they were prominently featured in the giant billboard for "Raising Helen" at Hollywood and Highland, Ug boots never appear in the actual film. That person is a genius. An evil genius.

The funny thing about all of this is I was talking my Dad's friend who spent the last year in Austrailia and he said that Ug boots have been around there forever. That they aren't a brand, but just a type of boot. Then some fuckers from the states decided the patent the name "Ug" and even went to court about the Austrailians using the term Ug boots for anything other than their product. He thinks they won. I however refuse to even show an interest by looking it up on the internet as it will probably only encourage the fucking bastards. Americans! Gesh.
Well crap. That sounds like a far more likely and far less heartening explanation.
If it makes you feel better, the publicity photos for Raising Helen were taken more than six months before the advertising started, due to Kate Hudson's knocked-up state. So Raising Helen stylist was CRAZY FUTURE-SEEING PERSON and/or importer of crazed Aussie goods.
I think I mighta had Ugg-like boots at one point. Like, when I was five.
Oh, and those photos weren't even for Raising Helen, they were extras from some fashion photo shoot deal.
I have no idea why I know any of this.
